I think this is a great, robust, spicy, exciting dish. The flavours from the chorizo dressing along with the grilled leeks and fennel are just incredible.

Quinoa – is it worth it?

Quinoa is mostly found clinging to the mountain fields of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador and incredibly has been growing for domestic purposes since 3000BC. It forms a very important part of the natives’ staple diet, being nutritious, easily attainable and also extremely cheap – at least it used to be.


Pronounced keen-wa (not qui-no-a), the increasingly popular crop is a hugely profitable export for some South American countries. It has recently been hailed as a new “superfood” in the West, because it contains essential amino acids and high levels of calcium, phosphorous and iron.

It doesn’t taste too bad either, with a subtle nutty flavour and interesting texture. Along with a quick cooking time, it seems to be an all-round winner and is regularly seen on restaurant menus and supermarket aisles all over the UK.

Fantastic we say, its great that we are trying new things, especially when it’s so good for us.  But – and it’s a fairly big but – our love of quinoa has caused the price to skyrocket over the last few years. In fact, the price of quinoa has tripled since 2006, and not just in the Western countries.

Could there really be pets that understand everything we say? The dream of speaking to animals runs from Sigurd in Norse mythology right up to Dr Dolittle. Some researchers have claimed that they can actually do it, by teaching their subjects sign language or another mutually comprehensible means of communication.

Βασικός Εξοπλισµός: Γιατί υπάρχουν τόσα πολλά ροµπότ στα µυθιστορήµατα, αλλά κανένα στην πραγµατική ζωή; Θα µπορούσα να πληρώσω πολλά για ένα ροµπότ που θα µπορούσε να µαζεύει τα πιάτα ή να κάνει απλές δουλειές.

Όµως δεν θα το κάνω µέσα σ’ αυτόν τον αιώνα και προφανώς ούτε στον επόµενο. Φυσικά, υπάρχουν ροµπότ που συγκολλούν ή βάφουν σε τράπεζες συναρµολογήσεως και τριγυρίζουν στις αίθουσες των εργαστηρίων. Η ερώτησή µου αφορά στις µηχανές που περπατάνε, µιλάνε, βλέπουν και σκέφτονται πολλές φορές καλύτερα απ’ ότι τα αφεντικά τους.

Ξερά Κουκιά με Ασκολύμπρους

Τ’ ασκολύμβρι βασικά φύεται άγριο, ενώ τελευταία άκουσα πως καλλιεργείται πειραματικά, αλλά πουλιέται μόνο στις αγορές της Κρήτης. Φυτρώνει σε λόφους και χωράφια σε ολόκληρη τη Μεσόγειο, πρέπει όμως να ξέρει κανείς πώς να το μαζέψει δίχως να το καταστρέψει και ποιο μέρος της ρίζας και των νεαρών του βλαστών ξεχωρίζονται και τρώγονται. Εκτός από τους Κρητικούς, ασκολύμβρους τρώνε και οι Ισπανοί, κυρίως σε ανοιξιάτικα μαγειρευτά.

Στην Ανδαλουσία το βάζουν και σε σαλάτες και ομελέτες και το λένε tagarina, ενώ, σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες που βρήκα στο διαδίκτυο, στη Σαλαμάνκα του 16ου αι. το τρώγανε ωμό ή σε μαγειρευτά. Πάντως, στις φωτογραφίες που βρήκα, το ισπανικό Scolymus μοιάζει αρκετά διαφορετικό από εκείνο της Κρήτης. Σήμερα στην Κρήτη, το ασκολύμβρι –ή οι ασκόλυμβροι, όπως αποκαλούνται στο νησί- είτε γίνεται τουρσί και σερβίρεται σαν συνοδευτικός μεζές με τη ρακί, είτε μαγειρεύεται με κατσίκι.

Αυτό φαντάστηκαν και οι Comediva και «μαγείρεψαν» ένα διαφημιστικό για την Beer of Thrones, μία μπύρα με πολύ Game of Thrones παρενέργειες.

Google acquires kite-power generator

Well I did’nt see this coming. Using lots of UA tech Google invests in yet more cutting edge stuff (ed). Google has acquired a US company that generates power using turbines mounted on tethered kites or wings. Makani Power will become part of Google X – the secretive research and development arm of the search giant.

Monsanto and the Insect Apocalypse

Why does the US government live out extreme pesticide devotion? There can be only one reason: a foreseeable insect invasion. Monsanto is an American multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation based in Missouri. It is a leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed and of the herbicide glyphosate, which it markets under the “Roundup” brand.

The company’s first product was the artificial sweetener saccharin, which it sold to the Coca-Cola Company. By the 1940s Monsanto was a major producer of petroleum plastics, including polystyrene and synthetic fibers. The company also manufactured contentious products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, and recombinant bovine somatotropin.
